He is best known for playing Ken Barlow in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street since it began broadcasting on 9 December 1960. He is the longest-serving actor in a continuing television drama, and as of 2024, holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-serving television actor in a continuous role.
Prior to Coronation Street, Roache had a brief career in repertory theatre and appeared in television roles.
Roache has been involved in several controversies throughout his life, including being acquitted of rape and indecent assault charges in 2014. He has also spoken openly about his personal life, including his relationships and struggles.
